Matthew Pillsbury uses long exposure on a tripod with only the use of ambient surrounding light for his images causing the photos background still and yet the foreground of people doing their everyday routines is caused to look blurred, transparent and ghostly throughout his shoots. This creates a spooky 'ghost town' like atmosphere which makes his photos unique and thought provoking. He carries the theme of black and white photography throughout most of his photographs and this has inspired me to do the same as it creates a similar atmosphere to what I want to create in my photographs. I also will use the same techniques as Matthew does by experiementing with different lengths of exposure to find the right time and I will also use a still surface to create the ghost town like compostition that he creates in his images by isolating the main focus of the photo and contrasting it with the background.
I like the contrast between his photo's where some of the blurred people are seen more than others in certain images. I chose these three photographs because the amount of blur contrasts in them and shows the different length of exposures used. The more blurred and more transparent ones use a longer exposure and more movement than the others as it is less obvious that there is people there because they are so transparent the exposure must have been longer for them to merge slightly more into transparency than those where the people are still clearly there in the photographs, just more blurred and more opaque because of the shorter exposure time.
